The challenge?
Gap Group is responsible for the hire of equipment that has health and safety implications for the user if it is not operated correctly.
Example
Jack hammers, rammers and some hand drills can only be used safely for a limited time period. This information must be available to the user.
The Ritchey ID solution?
Gap Group is supplied with pre-printed cable ties in red, amber and green that show safety time limits for continuous use. Items with a red tag should not be operated until the user has consulted a supervisor. Amber-tagged items can be used safely for a period of up to two hours, while green tags indicate that the item can be used more or less continuously during an eight-hour working day.
User comments
Gap Group health and safety officer, Malcolm Campbell says the colour coded cable ties have been particularly useful because of the increase in the number of foreign workers in the UK.
“The traffic light colour coding system gives a clear indication on time limits to everyone using our hire equipment, whether or not they speak English as a first language,” says Mr Campbell.
“ We needed a simple system and Ritchey ID has provided us with a way of identifying our equipment which works very well.”
“We are now looking into the possibility of adding more text to the cable ties, so they convey additional information like noise levels, weight levels and re-test dates.”
